How deep the grind goes
Grinding depth is set by what happens next on that spot. Six to eight inches below grade is enough for sod. Twelve inches or more is worth it before planting a replacement tree, laying pavers or pouring a slab, because remaining wood keeps settling as it decomposes.
Tell us the plan for the area in your project description and the quote will specify the depth.
Surface roots and lifted hardscape
The same machine handles the surface roots that lift driveways, walkways and pool decks - a common problem where laurel oaks and ficus were planted in narrow strips. Roots are ground back where it is safe for the tree, or fully where the tree is already gone.
What is left behind
A single stump produces a surprising volume of chips - usually more than the hole can hold. By default we rake the grindings level and leave them in place as mulch. If the area is being re-sodded we can haul the excess and backfill with clean topsoil instead; note which you want and it will appear on the quote.
Utilities and access
Every grind requires an 811 locate before the wheel turns, because irrigation, low-voltage lighting, septic and utility laterals often run within a few feet of an old planting hole. Access matters too - a standard machine needs about a 36-inch gate. Include a photo of the gate or side yard with your request so the right machine is scheduled.
